Good Eats: Sunday at Takashi

January 11th, 2012  |  Published in Eat

It’s official. Takashi Yagihashi is a genius. Sure, dinners are divine here. But Sunday noodles (and everything else) are not to miss here, as Kevin Pang reported long ago. Finally I made it in, just in time for it to be old news as Slurping Turtle opens. Turns out make new friends but keep the old rings true here too. Here’s a rundown of the treats.

the dish: duck fat fried chicken (appetizer)

the deets: amish chicken marinated in a slightly sweet soy glaze and fried in duck fat until perfectly crisp. Crunchy outside, juicy center, plenty of meat to go around. Served with a spiced creamy dressing with sesame and napa cabbage.

the deal: do they have this in entree form? Sorry Table 52.

the dish: ramen egg noodles: classic tokyo style ramen, braised pork, barbeque egg, marinated bamboo shoots

the deets: slurpy, semi-soft, traditional Japanese thin noodles in a perfectly umami but slightly sweet broth (no too-salty, MSG-spiked instant ramen here) that takes Chef T 24 hours to make. Pork slices just fall apart with tenderness with even a gentle touch. Egg is a soft boiled one – just slightly runny with shape still intact. Served with a slice of crunchy nori like an oyster cracker with clam chowder.

the deal: the ultimate cold weather comfort food. While everyone overcrowds Slurping Turtle I’ll likely just come back here or take it to go.

the dish: green tea shortbread with white chocolate mousse and mango sorbet

the deets: soft and buttery but lightly flavored shortbread cookies atop a rich white chocolate mousse and a sorbet so “untouched” it tasted like eating a very cold, soft mango. Just like the French make em.

the deal: one of the better desserts I’ve ever had. No joke.
